Your Source of Worth

Dove Onslaught Commercial

This video is shocking in its portrayal of the gross reality for women in America. Our society's overwhelming objectification of women for sex and beauty has innumerable effects on everyone who lives in it, and Dove's commercial begs for some response (from mothers, I'm assuming): "Talk to your daughter before the industry does." This is good. Mothers should do exactly that. What concerns me, though, is what the mothers are going to say when the conversation starts.

The problem is that all the mothers who are being exhorted to talk to their daughters were not only brought up in such a society, but also continue to live in it and soak it in every day. These are the mothers to whom the beauty industry advertises. These are the mothers who read the magazines; who buy the makeup, skin, and hair products and obsess over their reflections in the mirrors or the numbers on the scale; who have even shut out the messages of the world concerning beauty but instead turned to its other criteria for worth and success.

I feel comfortable saying that most of you don't want your daughters (current or future/potential) to grow up drowning in a hyper-sexualized culture like you were. But the problem is that you are still immersed in it yourself. And many of you still drink it in like it's not poison - yet you say you don't want to pass it on to the next generation. Unless the truth intervenes here, there is no reason for your children to believe otherwise about beauty, sexuality, and the criteria for being "good enough." So, by God's grace, let Truth speak here for our good and for the good of the daughters who have yet to be conceived.

1. Physical attractiveness and sexual desirability determine your worth. No one wants to say we believe this. But we do believe it. People who resemble the culture's beauty ideals like believing this because it gives them reason for pride, and those who don't resemble such ideals are crushed by standards they cannot meet. It is a lie and it's equally harmful to both groups of people. Both miss the vast majority of the purpose of the physical body God has made. If we follow the example of advertisements, which many young women do, we end up spending the majority of our time trying to allure men with our sensuality and compete with other women for the position of Object of Envy. We were made for much more than this, and we know it! Our bodies were made for more than sex appeal, and so were the bodies of those models and celebrities whose pictures you've cut out from magazines and hung on your walls as a testament to the idolatry of your own hearts.

2. Intellect, skill, and social acceptance determine your worth.  The world, maybe in reaction against the massive campaign for women as sex objects but probably just because we like to think this, also tells women that we can earn more value by being smarter, more capable, and more socially acceptable. But upon judging themselves by these standards, most will bear the detrimental effects of "never good enough" just like followers of the beauty industry. And the intellectual and capable women are given license to look down on the others who are somehow incapable of achievements as great as theirs. It sounds pompous, reserved for someone with greater accomplishments than ours. But the truth is that we do it no matter how small our accomplishments are. I did it in high school with my petty academic awards and social honors, and I'm tempted to do it now. You latch onto this idea, and suddenly the women who aren't as smart, who are mean, who are socially awkward, and who don't speak your language, the elderly and the young, the poor and the handicapped - suddenly these women become a little less human in your eyes. Tell me how this is an improvement upon the objectification of women as sex objects.

Here's the truth: Your worth doesn't come from yourself. Our worth does not come from what we do or how we look; it doesn't even come from the self as some kind of inherent value; it comes from God, our Creator, who gave it to us when He decided to make us in His own image. Before Adam was, God said He would make Him in His likeness. Dignity was given to mankind by God before he even existed, and thus in our very existence as creatures of God we have worth. What makes us think we can add to such dignity by our own abilities or beauty? And what do we even do with the intellect, physical beauty, and relationships God graciously gives us? We trash God's name and live for ourselves.

Society is the way it is because it's full of people like you and me. We rebel against the God who gave us our worth and instead try to earn our value according to man-made standards. God hates it, and humans can't even find satisfaction in it because we were made not only by Him, but FOR Him. God made your body for more than just sensuality. He made your mind and your personality for more than academic prestige and social success. He crafted every part of you for His glory - to get praise. Every part of you belongs to Him, and every part of you sins against Him when you refuse to live according to His purpose. The problem of women trying to find their identities in how they look and what they do won't get fixed by positive self-esteem. It's a deep-rooted sin problem that only God is big enough to handle.

Here's the truth: Christ has already determined your worth - and it's greater than any of your own criteria combined. When Jesus left heaven and humbly came to earth as the holy and righteous God-man, He came to find those who were lost and save them. He came to give His life up to take the punishment from God that we deserved. He came to forgive us of our pride and to free us from bondage to these sinful lies that run so deep in our culture and in our own hearts. He was raised from the dead to give new life to those who trust that He is truly the Lord of all and the Savior. If you don't know Him, turn to Him and He will forgive you! If you have been saved by His grace through faith, stop feeding yourself lies as though you don't already have the truth! The truth is: Your worth was determined for the rest of time by the price that was paid for your life by Jesus' death on the cross. He gave Himself for you when you were completely undeserving. He saved You! You were re-created in Christ to do good works, to further the Kingdom of God, to glorify the Lord who saved you. Stop listening to a society that demeans women and reduces us to objects for lust and selfish gain and live for the glorious hope you have in Christ - for an everlasting Kingdom of justice, righteousness, and peace ruled by the Lord who gave His own life for YOU.

This means freedom for you even today, and delight in doing the will of God because you don't have to strive to build up your own reputation or measure up to society's standards. You have a much higher calling and a much greater God than any this world can offer. This revelation was so freeing when God hit me with it the other day. I was praying about my own struggles with these things, evaluating my worth by how well my physical appearance matched the standards I've set:

"My body is not merely for my own glorification - it's not just for me or for others to be pleased with my appearance! God gave it to me as a gift to show Him off. My hands to prepare food and type papers; my eyes to perceive others' nonverbal expressions; my lips to tell the Good News of my Savior; my legs and lungs to run and play games with others; my arms to lift groceries, patients, and car seats one day; my ears to listen to sweet teaching of Scripture and hear cries for help. This body is for Your kingdom and You delight to see it used for You, O God! Thank You!"

Worship Him, praise Him - and stop looking to yourself to find things worthy of praise. The Lord is more than enough, and you will find delight in Him - oh, how wonderful and praiseworthy is our God! A life of humility before Him is of infinitely more worth than a life of striving to be sufficiently wealthy, intelligent, sexy, or popular. Which do you want to pass on to the next generation of young women?

When you're a mother, talk to your daughter before the beauty industry does. But before you're a mother, let God talk to you to clean up all the lies it's already told you.

Satisfied in Christ

I need to share:

I am no longer satisfied except in Christ. Only He can bring me hope. No longer does my relationship with Erik bring me fulfillment; no longer does my GPA determine my worth; no longer do my own acts of "righteousness" and good works establish my perfection.

I now find that I am satisfied in Christ. He fulfills my every longing for protection and love; He determined my worth by laying His life down to buy me eternal life; He establishes my perfection through His true righteousness that expose my best deeds as selfish, filthy, and worthless.

And so my desire is for Him, not for love; for Him, not for self-confidence; for Him, not for the praise and acclamation of man. My desire is for Him, and, oh - how I long for Him! How I long for the Living Water, the Bread of Life, the Holy One of Israel, the Fount of every blessing! Take the world but give me Jesus - give me Jesus, give me Jesus. His grace is sweeter, His love is stronger, His power is greater than any grace and love and power offered by the competitors in this world. One glimpse of the fullness of Christ exposes the complete inadequacy of everything outside of Himself. He truly is sufficient. He truly satisfies.

And what can I do but praise Him, praise Him, praise Him? For He saw my need and my hunger, and He gave Himself to save me and fill me with every spiritual blessing in Himself. Oh, what a good God we serve. What a good Savior we have. Praise the Lord!

Unity in the Bible, Unity in our Dorm Room

Jesus

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."
- Matthew 5:9
"Therefore if you [Jews] are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering."
- Matthew 5:23-24
"Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are."
- John 17:11
"I do not ask on behalf of these [disciples] alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and you in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that they world may know that you sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me."
- John 17:22-24
"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house, and it fell - and great was its fall."
- Matthew 7:24-27

Paul
"But God has composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it."
- 1 Corinthians 12:24b-26
"Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord..."
- Romans 12:9-11
"Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God."
- Romans 15:5-7
"But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices...
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity...
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father."
- Colossians 3:8-9, 12-14, 16-17

James
"What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in in your members? You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel...do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God?"
- James 4:1-2, 4

Peter
"Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God."
- 1 Peter 4:8-10
"Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you."
- 1 Peter 5:6-7
"Greet one another with a kiss of love."
- 1 Peter 5:14

John
"We love, because He first loved us.
If someone says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen."
- 1 John 4:19-20
**********************
God has granted peace between three of His daughters. Tonight, there is peace in this room between three sisters who had hurt each other and were apart from God.
He is faithful to forgive our sins! May we be faithful to do the same for one another when we are wronged!
Thank you, God, for this love!

From a Stone Heart to a Heart of Flesh: Life!

As a brand-new nursing student, I get the privilege of learning about the intricacies of the seemingly-infinitely complex human body. This results in a few things:
1. Upon hearing a friend complain of, say, minor pain in her abdomen I quickly ask, on average, a million questions and then proceed to offer potential causes and suggest remedies that "I think should work" because it kind of relates to what I just learned in Physiology.
2. When I come across anything in the Bible that talks about sickness, pain, or the human body, I immediately try to figure out what was wrong with the "patient" or interpret more deeply the meaning of the illustration.
3. Well...we'll get to this one later.

Today was a day for Result Number Two. Here at Biola, we really emphasize the metaphorical meaning of the Hebrew word "heart" as the primary place of reason and emotion: the center of a person's being. We stand by the truth that the content of the heart determines our thoughts and actions. (Pro. 4:23, Matt. 15:18-20) While this is a valid and true definition of the word, what we often forget is that the heart is also an organ of the body (imagine that!), and a rather important one at that. So let's review!

The function of the physical heart is to 1) deliver deoxygenated, CO2-filled blood to the lungs, where it receives oxygen and gets ride of carbon dioxide, then 2) deliver this life-giving blood to the rest of the body. If the heart doesn't "beat," tissues don't receive the oxygen necessary for function and are filled with waste products, causing tissue death and, after a short period of time, death of the body as a whole.

How can this knowledge of the function of the physical heart help us when the Bible uses the word "heart"? Let's look at the illustration of God changing stone hearts into ones of flesh in the book of Ezekiel:
"When [the Israelites] come [into the land of Israel], they will remove all its detestable things and all its abominations from it. And I [God] will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and do them. Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God." (Ezekiel 11:18-20)

God, after acknowledging the disobedience of the Israelites, promises a time of prosperity through obedience to Him. He illustrates this by promising to change the stone (rebellious) heart to a living (obedient) one. When I read this passage, I often picture Israel as a person who is quite alive; she simply needs a heart transplant. I assume that every other aspect of the patient is healthy and fully-functional. Wait, what? Good thing I'm only a beginner at this nursing thing, right?
How is it that any person can be healthy while her heart is completely non-functional? The only way the body can survive is if it has adequate oxygen supply through the blood. So let's be honest: if Israel's heart is dead, Israel is dead.

The heart is a mass of muscle that allows the right volume of blood to pass through its chambers at the right speed by different sets of contractions and relaxations. The problem with a stone heart? Even if it is hollow and can contain liquid inside, does stone have any ability to stretch to hold a greater volume of liquid or contract to push it out in the opposite direction from which it came? No! Stone is inflexible, immovable.
We already know that a stone heart is one so callous that it doesn't feel: it neither cries out against unrighteousness nor yearns for the goodness of God. But a stone heart is also one that, by its nature, cannot contribute to the good of the organism as a whole. A heart of stone is incapable of doing what a heart was made to do: deliver life to the body!

Physically, when the heart fails to do its job, the rest of the body is impaired, invariably sentenced to die. This state of cardiac failure is the one that every human being suffers spiritually by separation from God. Because if God is the source of life, then our natural state of rebellion against Him is, inevitably, death.

But look at how gracious our God is! He doesn't leave His people to die; He promises to Israel that, though their heart is of stone and they repeatedly slander His name, He will give them "a new heart." Note that He doesn't say "different hearts" - no, He promises one heart of obedience to unite all the people under Him. Even more incredible is His promise that He will put His very Spirit within them! The Spirit will bring life to them, supplying them with every thing they need to do His will. God isn't just giving His people a desperately-needed heart transplant; He's also giving them a blood transfusion. Without either, they're dead - truly lifeless.

The same promise is true for Christians today as was for the Israelites then! God takes the cold, stone heart of a people rebellious toward Him and replaces it with a heart of flesh: a heart of muscle, valve, artery, and vein; a heart capable of pumping blood so that the rest of the body can do what it was designed to do; a heart that gives life to the body! Without this heart, we are worthless, dead in our sins. With this heart, we are united in the life of God through Christ His Son! Only when God gives us a heart of flesh and fills us with His life-giving Spirit will we be capable of carrying out the tasks for which He created us. Only with this heart of flesh can we love and glorify God, serve others, and truly live. And praise God! For He loves us so much that He offers us this life!

This leads me to Result Number Three of learning physiology:
3. I am brought to a genuine humility before the God who created the human body and the soul which inhabits it. And I am filled with a profound sense of reverence, awe, and adoration when I get even a glimpse of His abundant love for me. To Him be the glory forever and ever!

"And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and do them. Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God."
- Ezekiel 11:19-20

March 26th Prayer

Lord,
You are indeed Lord over heaven and earth, more powerful and beautiful than anything I'll ever know or see. Help me to live like it. Help me, God. For without Your Son, I am nothing before You. Yet He gave Himself for me, and has sent Your Spirit to guide me. And now I can be called Your very own daughter.
How greatly You have loved me!
God, help me to love You with all that I am and have; my heart hates the evil within it and yet refuses to recognize Your abundant forgiveness and grace that has forgiven me my wrongs and given me life. Yes, You've given me LIFE! What a beautiful, wonderful gift!
May I love You more than all the gifts You have given Me. May I remember that You gave even Your own Son for my sake. Indeed, You are both the Giver and the Gift. And for that, I shall thank You for all eternity!

You are Lord, You are God; I am not. Give me humility. Hold my heart.
Make it what You want it to be, that I may live a life that brings You glory!

The Frailty of Humanity

"No amount of planning, no skills or specs or spreadsheets, can stop a force that moves the planet." - TIME Magazine's Nancy Gibbs on the March 11th Japan earthquake.

If a part of this created world is able to move the very planet from which it gains its power, how much more power will the Creator of this universe have to shake it to its very foundations? And if humans are helpless before even the natural forces of this world, why do we assume we will somehow be able to contend with this mighty God when He Himself moves the planet?

We are hopelessly frail; we can't even convince our own hearts to beat one more vial of life-giving blood into our bodies. And though we pride ourselves on a supposed goodness that separates us from other species, we can't truly care for one another. No, we are too enraptured by the fleeting beauty of that which satisfies our selfish desires to even consider the needs or wishes of others.
Of what can we boast? What accomplishment have we to offer a Creator?
Who are we before Him who formed the mountains and placed every celestial body exactly where it belongs?
Who are we to cry out to this God that He is not worth our mere acknowledgment of His deity?
Who are we that we refuse to bow in total submission to this King over all kings?

Just as a tsunami causes entire cities to crumble under its sheer force and a fiery sunset strips us of our ability to find words, so will our God bring all people to their knees by His beauty and might. When that day comes, He will bring justice upon the earth, to condemn those who have not known and honored Him as Lord. But He will also be merciful to those who have believed in His revelation and salvation through Jesus Christ, moved to obedience out of a love for Him.

"We love because He first loved us." - 1 John 4:9
"This is love for God: to obey His commands, and His commands are not burdensome." - 1 John 5:3
"The first and foremost [command] is this: 'Hear, O Israel! The LORD our God, the LORD is One. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." - Mark 12:28-31

God, forgive us for our pride. You are Lord over all.

Blessed by Tonight

I'm so encouraged by my brothers and sisters here at Biola, and I'm so appreciative of and thankful for the ones far away. God continues to amaze me with the blessings He pours out on me so that I can better live my life the way He wants me to - the way I was created to live it!
Praise God; He alone is good, and from Him are all good things!
Father, help me to recognize that You ARE Lord of all, even my own heart. Take it and rule over it; captivate me by Your beauty, truth, and goodness.
